What you are being prescribed
A compounded preparation made for you by a licensed 503A compounding pharmacy on your physician’s prescription. Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved and have not been evaluated by FDA for safety or effectiveness. That is a statement about the regulatory pathway, and it is also a real limit on the evidence available.
What the evidence supports
Evidence differs enormously between therapies. Some hormone therapies have decades of controlled trial data in defined populations. Several peptides have little or no human trial evidence for the uses people seek them out for, and mechanistic plausibility is not the same as demonstrated benefit. Your physician will tell you which category yours falls into, and the Learning Center publishes the same information in the open.
Risks
All therapy carries risk. Injection-site reactions, headache, nausea, fatigue and changes in appetite or fluid balance are among the more common effects. Hormone therapy can affect fertility, red blood cell count, lipids, mood and prostate markers, and requires monitoring. Some therapies are contraindicated in active or prior cancer, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or specific cardiac, kidney and liver conditions. Tell your physician everything you take, including over-the-counter products.
Monitoring is part of the treatment
You agree to complete the retesting your protocol calls for. Declining monitoring is a reason a physician may stop prescribing, because unmonitored hormone and peptide therapy is where the real harm happens.
Your right to stop
You may stop at any time and should tell your physician when you do, because some therapies are tapered rather than stopped abruptly.
