What the trials tend to show
A number of randomised trials of hydrolysed collagen peptides report small improvements in measured skin hydration and elasticity over eight to twelve weeks. The effects are modest, the measurement instruments vary between studies, durations are short, and a large share of the literature is funded by manufacturers. That is a genuine signal wrapped in reasons for caution, and both halves belong in the summary.
The comparison almost nobody runs
Collagen is a protein, and an incomplete one — it is low in tryptophan. Most trials compare it against placebo rather than against an equivalent amount of ordinary complete protein. So the interesting question, whether collagen beats simply eating enough protein, is largely unanswered. If your total protein intake is low, fixing that is the higher-value move and it helps muscle too.
Where it sits in a sensible order
After sun protection, after a retinoid, after not smoking, and after adequate total protein. If all of those are in place and you want to try it, it is inexpensive and the safety profile is unremarkable. It is not a substitute for any of the four things above it.
Key points
- Small measured effects on hydration and elasticity, short trials, industry-funded.
- Rarely compared against simply eating enough complete protein.
- Fifth on the list, not first.
