Why location matters
Fat stored around the organs is metabolically active in a way subcutaneous fat is not: it drains into the portal circulation and is associated with insulin resistance, dyslipidaemia and elevated inflammatory markers. This is why waist measurement and waist-to-height ratio add information that weight and BMI alone cannot, and why a lean-looking person can have a poor metabolic profile.
What actually reduces it
An energy deficit, from whatever dietary pattern you can actually sustain, plus regular aerobic activity. Visceral fat tends to respond earlier than total weight, which is why metabolic markers often improve before the scale is impressive. There is no targeted-spot solution, no supplement with a credible record here, and no device.
The cheapest useful measurement
A tape measure. Measure your waist at the level of the navel, at the end of a normal breath out, and divide by your height in the same units. Track it monthly alongside the panel. It costs nothing and it moves before most laboratory values do.
Key points
- Visceral fat is metabolically active; subcutaneous fat much less so.
- Waist-to-height adds what BMI cannot.
- Deficit plus aerobic work. No spot solution exists.
