Sleep is the cheapest protocol on this website

It moves more of the markers we measure than anything you can inject, and nobody sells it.

Controlled human trials, replicated, with outcomes that matter.

What short sleep does to your panel

Restricted sleep measurably worsens insulin sensitivity, raises markers of inflammation, disrupts appetite-regulating hormones in the direction of eating more, and lowers testosterone in men. These are not soft findings — several have been shown in controlled laboratory sleep restriction studies in healthy volunteers over days, not years.

Which means your panel can lie about you

A panel drawn at the end of a bad fortnight can read like a person who needs a protocol. This is a practical reason to sort sleep before drawing conclusions, and a practical reason a physician asks about it. If you are being told a number justifies therapy, the sleep question comes first.

The unglamorous list that works

A consistent wake time, including at weekends. Light in the morning and less of it late. Caffeine with a hard cut-off in the early afternoon, because its half-life is longer than most people assume. Alcohol earlier and less of it — it shortens the time to falling asleep and wrecks the second half of the night. A cool, dark room. And if you snore and wake unrefreshed, a sleep study rather than a supplement.

Key points

  • Controlled restriction studies move insulin sensitivity, inflammation, appetite hormones and testosterone.
  • A panel after a bad fortnight can misrepresent you.
  • Fixed wake time, morning light, caffeine cut-off, less alcohol.
