The evidence, precisely

What has actually been shown

In a multicentre, double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial of 80 client-owned dogs with naturally occurring elbow or hip osteoarthritis, a single intra-articular injection of equine umbilical-cord MSCs improved force-plate gait analysis in 63% of dogs at eight weeks, with 77% improved on orthopaedic examination.

Punzón et al., J Am Vet Med Assoc 2022;260(15):1947–1955. PMID 36198051

Why we do not borrow the secretome trials

Results from one preparation cannot be carried to another. Micro-fragmented adipose tissue, stromal vascular fraction, platelet-rich plasma, conditioned medium, secretome, purified exosomes and culture-expanded stem cells are different products with different evidence. The two randomised canine trials are SECRETOME trials, not purified-exosome trials. In a canine demyelination model stem cells outperformed stem-cell-derived exosomes, and in equine tendon cells whole conditioned medium produced a larger response than its isolated vesicle fraction. So we do not present those trials as evidence for our own purified exosome line.

On immune response

In a randomised safety trial in dogs, both equine and canine MSCs raised antibody titres, with no adverse events after single or repeated administration. Umbilical-cord MSCs are immune-evasive, not immune-invisible — and we will not tell you otherwise.

About the two grades

Why the human-derived grade costs more:

  • Human perinatal tissue procurement operates inside a deeper donor screening, serology and NAT framework, with donor-eligibility records retained.
  • Larger single-donor lots mean more doses share one release-test panel, so lot-to-lot variation within a single purchase is lower.
  • Allocation is constrained.

No head-to-head comparison of human-derived and equine-derived umbilical-cord products has been performed in dogs, cats or horses. The price difference reflects donor screening, lot size and documentation, not a demonstrated difference in clinical effect.

The equine-derived grade is the one with a randomised controlled trial in dogs. It is not a budget option, and we do not describe it as one.

Evidence against our own premium grade

The only head-to-head comparison of perinatal MSC extracellular vesicles found fetal-derived vesicles induced more robust transcriptional changes than perinatal-derived ones, and concluded that donor cell age mattered more than cell type. Human perinatal vesicles were the weaker performers in that study. We publish this because it runs against our own premium grade.
